You have to see the “Heirloom Portraits” we are creating of children. These pieces are a throwback to an old style of hand painted portrait art that is rare and requires highly skilled artistry to create. This unique style of portraiture is a truly beautiful and special way to capture and preserve a time in your child’s life. We’re so proud to be the only photography studio in the area offering anything like this! Here, take a look:
This type of black and white, hand-colored photography was first made popular in the Virginia Beach area in the 1940’s, by the former Boice Studios. Back then, they were one of just a few studios in the area that would hand color photographs, creating upscale, one-of-a-kind memories for their customers. Just imagine this time in Virginia Beach history – jazz and big band music were popular, men were heading off to fight in WWII and the famous Cavalier Hotel was in its prime.
Over time, the number of artists creating hand colored portraits became very scarce. So, I was really excited to have the opportunity to begin working with the amazing oil artist Lynn Cross. Together, we create these Heirloom Portraits. Back in the 70’s and 80’s, Lynn actually apprenticed with Boice Studios, hand-coloring photographs here in Virginia Beach! Collaborating with Lynn and a master darkroom technician who uses true black & white fiber paper (just as they did since the 40’s!) we are keeping the art of hand painted photographic portraits alive and well. It’s a very intricate and painstaking process, but one I love dearly.
So, you can probably tell that this is probably my favorite type of work of all that I do. The Heirloom Portraits we create at Ramone Photography just have such a timeless quality about them. They’re a beautiful way to create a treasured memory of your children and grandchildren - something that you will cherish and that will touch their hearts for a lifetime. Let me know if you want to hear more!
PS They make for great Bridal Portraits, too!
